Hormone therapy

In addition to your Radiotherapy, you are likely to be offered Hormone therapy. Also known as Androgen Deprivation Therapy (or ADT)

• Androgens are male sex hormones made by glands in the body.
• Early in their development, prostate cancers need androgens to grow.  Hormone therapies, which are treatments that decrease the hormone levels or block the hormone action, can slow down the growth of the cancer.
• Hormone therapy on its own won’t cure your prostate cancer.  Hormone therapy can be used with radiotherapy to make the treatment more effective.
• You will usually be asked to stay on this therapy for either six months or three years
